Because You Asked
Well you probably didn't ask, but my mom did. I know it's been 5 months since I've written. Oh well. It's hard, and not usually something I think about doing anymore, probably something to do with the fact that I'm not a writer. But in other news: things are going very well. I had a great time working at the real estate company. It was easy and pleasant and at the end I got to go to their holiday christmas party in a very fancy hotel (The Standard) in a fancy exclusive room (nicknamed "The Boom Boom Room") learned a lesson about respecting the privilege of an open bar and had my first experience falling asleep on the subway on the way home. Don't worry I survived it without a scratch. Just a horrible hangover. Once the lovely woman I was covering for returned from her maternity leave I made a conscious decision to try my best not to take any jobs which weren't in any way pertaining to the type of field I wanted to be in. I ended turning down something like 5 jobs in a few months. A personal/ production assistant thing for this eccentric lady with an independent film company in the basement of her Tribeca apartment building, a few temp administrative assistant things a pharmaceutical companies or something, and a part time production assistant thing at this college for their location services. Finally I received a response from a position I applied to on LinkedIn. No one has ever responded to me from that website before, and this was for a job that sounded eerily similar to something I wanted to do and the response I received had the subject line "impressive resume". It seemed to go to be true and it ended up even better. The job I had applied for was "Production Designer" at a consulting agency that dealt with the transformation of corporations. They had a beautiful office space in Chelsea, right off of the same subway line that I live off (this is a MAJOR plus), they had free coffee, groceries, lunch, wine and cheese on Fridays, and lots of smart nice and international employees. They hired me for a 1-month contract as a (well) paid "production design intern". I was happy but not as ecstatic as I expected to be. Once I started I had this sinking feeling that this position wasn't what I was hoping it would be. It was design oriented and I was learning, but mostly about graphic design, and creating things that CEOs would see but usually no one else. I was having a hard time feeling the purpose. Another job positing fell in my lap, this one an architecture assistantship like so many I'd applied to before. I wanted to give my new job a shot not sure if it was the first day jitters or the job responsibilities that was giving me reserve, but I applied to the architecture job anyways figuring what could it hurt. They asked me in for an interview which coincidentally was scheduled for the day I randomly had off of work because of a staff meeting I wasn't invited to. I went in to interview, in the very same neighborhood as my old metal shop, and after speaking to the founder for about 40 minutes she said "so I guess we'll have you start monday then…" To get to the point of the tedious story, I quit the wonderful company who so graciously gave me a chance, but not after staying for two more weeks and attending the happy hour that the company hosted at one of my favorite bars near by. Last week was my first at my new job at the architecture firm. It's a very small company, usually just me and one other person in the office. It is poorly paid, but they are very nice and they speak French all the time. I'm scared and nervous to be in another learning position but I'm excited and relieved to finally be learning about the sorts I want to know and do.
Spring is finally here which only means that it's 40 degrees instead of 29 degrees. No leaves on the trees yet but I can see them almost trying. Change is happening all around me. My cousin Leah is getting married but first moving to Seattle, my cat sitting gig is also moving to the west coast and my boyfriend just moved into a new apartment.
Wanna see the invitations I made for Leah? (mom don't look cause you're getting one in the mail).
